Stein Valley Wilderness Guidebook – 2nd edition
This comprehensive guide to one of BC’s showcase provincial parks provides backpackers and hikers with the information needed to access and travel safely and respectfully within Stein Valley Nlaka’pamux Tribal Heritage Park, which is located between Pemberton and Lytton in southwest BC. Included in the 192 page book are:
- Over 45 hiking trail and route descriptions.
- Extensive natural and cultural history information.
- A fold-out, 18” x 24” colour map.
- Four large-scale, one-page maps.
- Comprehensive road access logs.
- Information on whitewater kayaking and backcountry skiing opportunities.
- Over 150 photographs and illustrations plus dozens of vignettes and sidebars to help convey the valley’s richness and diversity.
The guide is exhaustively thorough. Almost every page has a photo or a drawing with a tidbit of flora, fauna or cultural info. There are also explanations, by experts, of everything from the area’s famous pictographs to the predation techniques of the valley’s ant lion inhabitants.
The Tyee
Well-written guidebooks are worth their weight in time—as in, time well spent consulting one in advance of an adventure. That’s particularly true here in B.C., where, from one year to the next, roads are washed out by monsoon rains and new trails appear under the aegis of local stewardship groups. White devotes an entire chapter in his exhaustively researched Stein Valley Wilderness Guidebook to the larger topic of the politics of wilderness protection in this decade, as focused through that lens. Suffice it to say that what was achieved in the Stein has come to serve as a template for future successes.
The Georgia Straight
The long, highly publicized battle to save B.C.’s Stein Valley ended in 1995 with its declaration as a 107,191-hectare provincial park. By 2000, the definitive guidebook on the area was no longer available and the park continued to drop off backpackers’ radar. Re-enter author Gordon White and his revised Stein Valley Wilderness Guidebook, a great way to rekindle interest in a glorious wilderness on the Lower Mainland’s doorstep.
Vancouver Saun
I was a park ranger based out of the Lytton area for a summer back in 1984. It was like discovering an addictive sweet with the ability to discover one little area after another. I would go to my guidebook and visit new areas I hadn’t been to.
